2 – Implementing Keywords
Now that you have your keywords it is time to use them in your site. For starters, the important keywords should be placed in the page title. Try fitting keywords together to make a phrase.
“<title>SiteABC.com – Discounted Affordable Shoes</title>”
Next, the Meta tags. Meta tags are not what they used to be, but they are still an important part of a web page. They are still used to figure out what the site/page is about, and what is relevant within the site/page.
“<meta name=”keywords” content=”shoes, designer, discount designer shoes, affordable, discount”>”
“<meta name=”description” content=”We offer discount and affordable designer shoes for women, men and children at a fraction of the leading department store prices”>”
Another area to use keywords is in the body content. You can emphasis the importance of the keywords and phrases by making the word bold, using h1, h2 or h3 tags and making the word(s) a link. More information about keywords in links will be covered in the link value chapter.
Examples of formatting text:
- “<strong>Important Text</strong>”
- “<h1>Important text</h1>”
- “<h2>Important text</h2>”
- “<h3>Important text</h3>”
Tips:
- Refrain from using a single keyword more then once. Repeating keywords within a phrase should be fine, but use with caution. Repeated keywords were something abused and now can cause a site to be docked.
- If a keyword seems to be too broad use location or another factor that will help narrow down the target audience.
- Even though the amount of keywords you enter in these tags have no limit the more keywords you give a page the less significant the keywords are.
- A rule of thumb is to focus on 3 – 4 keywords for each page.
In summary:
- Use keywords in the page title, meta tags, links and body content
- Format keywords with bold and header tags (h1, h2, h3)
- Only focus on 3 – 4 keywords for each page
- Be cautious of being redundant with keywords; using a keyword too much can cause the opposite of the desired effect
- Stay away from keywords that are too broad
